Like Glass

how do we carry on when our lives are knocked to the floor, shattered like glass, consequently scattered and the pieces never to be assembled again.
scraping and trying to discern what pieces fit back together, while we find that we're missing too many pieces to make this life look the way it did before someone took it and knocked it off the shelf.
we're all made of the thinnest glass possible, we just guard the glass differently.
placed on higher shelves, encased in glass boxes or stowed away where no one will find it.

what do we do when we pick up that shattered glass, but throw it away.
if we cherished what is now the shattered remains, we might hold off for a bit,
but in the end we know it's useless to keep the pile we've brushed together.
which of us melts that glass and molds the pieces back together?

how do we carry on

if we don't linger, if we don't fixate, we can carry on.
we'll always find pieces of that shattered piece that we missed, in cracks, under furniture and glistening in the sun.
reminding us of what is now gone.

we may be made of fine glass, but we are not just one broken piece.
we are a collection, we are a cabinet full. Creating, adding and occasionally breaking different pieces.
we have more to ourselves than one aspect, than one piece.

we are not made up of only our own pieces, either. We have what others contribute to us and our collection.
adding diversity, adding strength.

never be too afraid to give pieces out to others
don't horde, but give freely and unconditionally.

don't fixate on the loss of one piece,
find joy in the pieces that still remain
and the pieces of yours, hung in other's collections.

how do we carry on?
we find a way
we carry on, we carry on.
